1. What Data We Collect
When you use MotoGearIQ, we collect the following categories of data:
Account information
- Full name and username you provide during registration.
- Email address used to create and verify your account.
- Profile information such as a profile photo and bio.
- Password (stored as a secure hash — we never store plain-text passwords).
Usage data
- Pages you visit and features you interact with.
- If you use public preview areas (such as Explore) without signing in, we may process limited technical data including IP address for security, abuse prevention, and rate limiting. A guest trip plan may be stored only in your browser's local storage on your device until you clear it or import it into an account — we do not store that draft on our servers until you save it while signed in.
- Content you create: bike builds, modifications, gear entries, posts, reviews, and trip plans you save to your account.
- Social interactions: follows, likes, and comments.
- Search queries and filter preferences.
- Device type, browser, operating system, and IP address (used for security and analytics).
Cookies and similar technologies
- Authentication cookies to keep you signed in across sessions.
- Preference cookies (e.g. theme settings) stored locally.
- Analytics cookies to understand how the platform is used in aggregate.
2. How We Use Your Data
We use the data we collect to:
- Provide, operate, and improve the MotoGearIQ platform.
- Authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- Personalise your experience and show relevant content.
- Send transactional emails such as email verification and password resets.
- Generate AI-powered summaries and recommendations (using anonymised or aggregated data where possible).
- Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and violations of our Terms of Service.
- Understand usage patterns to prioritise new features and improvements.
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use your data to serve targeted advertising.
3. Visibility Controls
MotoGearIQ gives you control over what appears on your public profile through visibility settings on your bikes, gear, and modifications. Here is exactly what those settings do and do not affect:
What “Private” means
- A private bike, gear item, or modification is hidden from your public profile. Visitors to your profile will not see it listed in your garage, gear, or mods.
- Private items are still fully visible to you when you are signed in to your own account.
What “Private” does not affect
- Reviews and ratings are always public. If you leave a star rating or written review on a bike, piece of gear, or modification, that review will appear on the product page under your name regardless of whether the item is set to private. Leaving a review is a deliberate public act.
- Your reviews and ratings feed into product star averages, review counts, catalog statistics, search results, and AI-generated product summaries — regardless of the item's visibility setting.
- AI-generated summaries use your review text and rating but do not include your name or identity. Your identity is only shown on the public review list for the product.
Posts
- Post visibility (public, followers, private) is independent of your garage visibility settings. A post you publish as public is visible to everyone regardless of whether the items tagged in it are private.
4. Data Storage
Your data is stored using the following infrastructure:
- Supabase — Our primary database and authentication provider. Data is stored on servers located in the EU/UK region.
- Vercel — Our hosting and edge infrastructure provider, operating primarily from EU/UK data centres. Server-side logs may be retained for short periods for debugging and security purposes.
We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, loss, or disclosure.
5. Cookies and Tracking
MotoGearIQ uses cookies and similar tracking technologies. These include:
- Essential cookies — Required for the platform to function, including session management and authentication.
- Preference cookies — Used to remember your settings such as your chosen colour theme.
- Analytics — We use Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights to collect anonymised usage and performance data. No personally identifiable information is shared with these tools.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies may prevent the platform from functioning correctly.
6. Third-Party Services
We use a limited set of trusted third-party services to operate MotoGearIQ:
- Supabase — Database, file storage, and authentication. Data processed under their Privacy Policy.
- Vercel — Hosting, edge network, and observability. Data processed under their Privacy Policy.
- SendGrid — Transactional email delivery (e.g. account verification, password reset, welcome messages, and trip-related notifications such as invitations where you use those features). Only what is needed to deliver the message (typically your email address and message content) is shared for this purpose.
- OpenAI — Used to power selected in-product AI features (such as product or bike summaries, caption or review-draft helpers where offered, and similar tools). Content you submit to those features may be processed by OpenAI. We avoid sending personally identifiable information to these services where feasible.
- Location and place search — Public place search on Explore may use OpenStreetMap Nominatim (subject to their terms). When you are signed in, some features may use Google Placesor similar services; use of those features is governed by the provider's policies.
